Why Hot Stones Are Incredibly Relaxing When Combined with Massage

Updated: Feb 16

You haven't enjoyed deep relaxation until you've had a hot stone massage with your massage. As an experienced massage therapist who recently relocated to Lawrence Kansas, I can tell you that adding a Hot Stone Treatment to your massage will help to take your body to the next level of total relaxation and stress reduction. It is the ultimate massage to experience on a regular basis. At a bare minimum, I recommend getting a massage every three to four weeks to improve your health and quality of living.

There are several reasons why I recommend adding a Hot Stone treatment to your massage.

And the number one reason to add hot stones to your massage is that your knots and stress completely melt away into the table. It improves the time spent on the table, reducing knots and stress. I believe that the heat from the hot stones relieves pain and reduces tension in your muscles much quicker when combined with your massage. It is worth the extra $25, because it increases productivity time spent on the table. And as an experienced Licensed Massage Therapist, ( L.M.T.), I can tell you that I notice a substantial give in the tight muscles after applying heat to them. Not only does applying heat increase blood flow to that spot, but it also loosens up the tight muscles so that I can easily knead and massage the tight spots out more easily and effectively. It definitely helps to speed up the healing process, reduces tension, and soothes and relaxes the whole nervous system.

In addition, the stones also have the ability to ground your energy when you're feeling off balance. At the same time the Hot Stones will release toxins deep in your muscles. That is why I also suggest that you drink plenty of water daily, and especially for a few days following your massages and hot stone treatment. This will help to release the toxins naturally without any side effects such as dizziness, headaches or fatigue.

You may be wondering how often you should get a hot stone massage. I would say that if you're just wanting to improve your circulation and treat yourself to an occasional release of tension and stress in your body, do it whenever you get the urge. But if you are wanting to address more chronic issues, whether they are mental or physical, then you may want to schedule bi-weekly sessions with me.

Other benefits of Hot Stone Massages and what to do following these massages:

  • The heat from the hot stones relax tight muscles and your entire body.

  • Improves your sleep

  • Reduces exercise induced muscle aches and pains.

  • It supports natural detoxification.

  • Reduces fat in the abdominal area when done on a regular basis.

  • In 2013, Ban, Kim, and Kim's did a study and found that those that got bi-weekly hot stone massages for five weeks showed weight loss and a reduction in fat in the abdominal area.

  • Multiple studies have shown that warm stone massage, (WSM), relaxes rigid muscle groups. Since heat reduces the rigidity of your muscles, it's a tried and true way to release that tension in your neck, back, and shoulders, which is where most people store their stress.

  • Drink plenty of water, eat healthy foods, and get plenty of rest.

  • Refrain from nicotine, alcohol, and other substances after getting a massage.

Contraindications or safety precautions of hot stone massages:

  • It is not recommended to get a Hot Stone Massage if you have neuropathy, diabetes, high blood pressure, and peripheral vascular disorder.

  • Any inflammatory conditions such as Lupus.

  • Avoid heat if you're pregnant

  • Avoid hot stone massage if you have any skin conditions like burns, skin cancer, open wounds, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, eczema, or shingles.

  • Post operative patients.

Other than that, I highly recommend the advantages of taking your massage to the next level of deep relaxation and the release of tension that is stored in your muscles. Especially if you work out regularly, work at a desk in the office, or tend to store stress in your neck back and shoulders. I also find that those that only get a massage once every year or so should definitely take advantage of the benefits of a hot stone massage. It will improve your massage experience, ground your energy, and deepen your relaxation while improving your circulation and loosening tight, sore muscles.
